Research and Formal Style

After reading Ch.1 in class about thesis statements and introductions and then coming up with our own I learned a great bit from professor Ahmed. In Chapter One we properly learned how to write a paper, a formal paper. Most students would disagree with writing a formal paper because they would assume the teacher or profesor is trying to change them or alter their identity, which isn't the case at all. By using formal language you are reaching more people than just the select few you would with your preferred style of writing. In the long run you will benefit professionally. Professor Ahmed is also showing us how to properly write a thesis statement and than answer it, such as what we did in class last friday.

When we gave our presentations in class friday group 3 read section 1.3, which says: "but it would be a mistake to think that learning to write sound research reports must threaten your true identity". The statement practically sums up everything I've previously stated in the first paragraph. Writing formal won't change your identity if anything it will better it. Also once we learn how to properly apply the answers in our papers to our thesis statements I believe we all will be able to consider ourselves proficient writers.

  1. This sounds good, and makes sense because it is true that writing formally can pretty much only benefit you in the long run. Though it may not show your true identity, it still helps you reach others that may have a greatly different identity. It may also help readers take you more seriously than if you were to write in a not so formal way.

  2. I totally disagree, I believe that writing formally can be the most effective way to provide competent research information. If a researcher wrote an academic paper or even a article in a news paper informally I would doubt his/her credibility. There is something to be said about the positive presentation of information to a reader, it holds so much of value.

  3. I feel that it is important to always write formally. If you are doing a research paper you need to appeal to your audience but still do it formally. If you were to publish your article in a scholarly journal your word choice and examples would be different from if you were submitting an article for your school’s newspaper, but they would both be done formally.

  4. I believe that this is a point of great weight. More students need to realize that formal writing enables you to reach a far wider audience! This also puts you into a position to spread topics that you truly care about with people across social boarders. I think more students should be taught about this topic because it strengthens your voice when you want to be heard.

  5. When writing a paper, it’s very important that you write formally. You want to grasp the attention of you audience, but you have to make sure it’s in a formal way. If you are writing a paper for your professor, scholars, boss, and etc you want to sound professional. You should never write a paper using slang because then you want be taken seriously. Being able to write formally can help in the long run.

  6. I agree, it is important to be able to write a paper formally. It shwos professionalism and your readers will become more in tune with the message that you are trying to convey, rather than not take your serious because of the way you chose to write your paper and come across to them.

  7. I agree. Writing formally will only benefit you in the long run. Professor’s and whoever else reads your paper will take what you write about more seriously, rather then if you didn’t write in a formal manner. You will sound like you know what you’re talking about. Also you will have a wider range for your audience.

  9. I agree that each research paper written needs to be formal. Whether the writer is in a professional setting or just writing for a college course, they have their credibility and reputation to uphold. You don't want to write a paper that is not going to be taken seriously, especially when each paper takes time and effort to write.

  10. I agree that by adopting a new writing style you have the opportunity to reach more people. For some people it is quite a challenge to step outside of your comfort zone and write with a different style other than your own. However, a person will find that this new style of writing will benefit them in other classes when writing a paper and even in the professional world.

  11. I feel like you made a very important point for us as college kids. Some students don't want to change their writing style for a grade. However, it is very important for us to learn how to write professionally for our future careers. And I think it is important to know that we can bring our identity into the writing in a professional manner.

  12. Great point about not changin our styles. I sometimes feel the same way but for us to grow and learn as writers we should adapt our writing styles to what is more formal and accepted.

  13. Having your own personal style of writing is important, but so is the ability to write professionally. Being able to write in a formal manner shows the reader that you are intelligent and know how to correctly address a paper. However, not every paper needs to be written in formal language, so having your own personal style is important too.

  15. I agree with this entry, writing formally can only benefit your paper, this way it is easy to read and understandable for all audiences. I don't believe it takes away any identity what so ever, the content of your paper can bring about your identity. I believe that writing formally is just a style most people are comfortable reading.

  16. It makes you seem more respectable and believable when you write formally. If you wrote in slang and mispelled words or with unusual analogies and whatnot, no one would take you seriously or be able to communicate with you because they would not be able to relate to your style of writing.
Writing formally not only allows people to see your opinion as respectable but also unifies the language of paper writing, beings everyone has to write formal papers in the same format, the same way.

  17. I think that writing formally is important no matter what because when you speak formally especially in your papers you get through to more people. Especially higher end people who only look at these types of things. Not only when writing papers but also having a formal conversation with people make you as a person seem very intelligent.

  19. I agree that formal writing in papers is the way to go. It better prepares us for writing in the future in the job world. Being formal and as opposed to informal is much more important for co-workers, employers, and other job situations.
