In class last week, my group read the second article about the feminism meme. The article was about a woman named Rebecca Watson who was offended when a man asked her out to coffee. The author went on to say “What’s kind of funny about these things is that feminists love to talk about how creeped out they are by men who pay attention to them, and they love to carry on in detail about the particular experiences.”
Webster defines feminism as the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. I feel that the author has a distorted view of feminism due to extremists like Rebecca Watson. Watson, I think, overreacted to a simple request from an acquaintance. However, the author was wrong to assume that all women with feminist ideals are as extreme as Watson. I believe that any person who values equality between men and women hold feminist notions; however on a smaller, less aggressive scale than Watson.

I do believe that their are extremists who are feminists. The article did make an extreme point based on a small group of feminists. Not all feminists are extreme or get offended by being asked to help by men. I believe that every one should be treated equal whether they are men or women.
ReplyDeletei agree i definitely have feminism notions, but also liked to be treated like a woman should be treated, with respect and delicately.
ReplyDeleteI feel feminists have a bad reputation of being extremists who dress up like guys and demand to be treated like "one of the dudes" however, that is just a certain degree of feminism. If someone chooses a lifestyle of feminist actions, then maybe they will be like that but not every feminist has to be an extremist so i agree with you emily.
I have to agree as well. Feminists can often be misconstrued as women who hate men and do not want help from any of them, but this is not true for every feminist. While women are not weak and meek like some people like to believe, it is still common courtesy to be polite to everyone, regardless of gender.
ReplyDeleteI agree, feminist can be to extreme at times. There has to be a medium-happy at some point. I didn't read the article but I remember you group discussing it. Men need to have respect for woman and vice versa. We are all equal, and not one is higher or lower, so we should all be treated this way and fairly.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you also, I believe that she overreacted in that situation. Asking someone for coffee is a nice gesture that any person whether a man or women can ask, Some feminists can be a bit extreme and can take things over the top when unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, some people think that one person relates to all feminist topics. I think that she was over reacting and didnt look at it as someone trying to be nice or wanting to have a good time. Sometimes women take good men as being weird or coming off strong when their not use to having someone treat them good in their life. But thats not fair that all women should be accounted for it.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the woman overreacted when asked out to get coffee as well as the author's opinion about all feminist being as extreme as this women.

ReplyDeleteI think they also overreacted about everything. It wasnt a class where i could focus or really learn about anything. But i do agree with christine's comment.

I don't know many things about the feminist movement, expect they want equal rights for women. I thought that was the core of their fight. I was taken aback to find she wasn't interested in having coffee with the opposite sex, did he have "koddies", where I'm trying to go with this is found her position in the matter juvenile and immature. However it is her view.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is wrong to assume that all feminists are extremists like Rebecca Watson. But they are out there. It's hard to believe it, but just like any other social group, there is a small handful of individuals within that group who would go to extremes to get their point across. I remember the discussion that day, and although most of the students could not see how a women could be that offended, I can see how a an extreme feminist could.
