Older adults and newer music styles

In the world of music and entertaniment, there has been some amazing music videos and musicans. Some older adults cant stand the new style of music, from techno/dubstep to rap/hiphop. Older adults love to listen to some artiest like the Beatles, to the Greatful dead, to Marvin Gaye. Personally i'm a huge fan of all those artiest, but can some older adults listen to artists like Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and even Notorious B.I.G. So what can we do to make older adults appreciate the new style of music?

In my mind we need to influence the older adults by maybe having a little sit down and conversation with them about the new style of music. Maybe they dont like how rappers curse and say expleciate words/meanings, but if you think about it and look at the lyrics its poetry. In a song by Kanye West called "Diamonds are Forever" it speaks a message that say the war in Africa about "blood diamonds" is a crime and should be stopped. Another song that speaks another message about how to live in the streets and the only way of income is by selling crack. This song is the "10 Crack Commandments" by Notorious B.I.G. So my final thought is will Older Adults final listen to "our music?" probably not.

  1. I don't think that it's so much that older people don't appreciate our generations music, but that it all has to do with phases. Yes, some older adults hate certain types of music, but that is often because they feel that it negatively influences their children or views. As humans age their tastes in music change. When they're young they may like whatever their generations music is, but as things change over time they do as well. As people live their lives they experience things personally that change their view on life, love, etc. So their interests in music change.

  2. I do not think that we have to have a little sit together with older adults to talk about our "style" of music. They have their own music they grew up with and we have ours. My parents listen to their own music they grew up with and not mine. We shouldn’t try and make then listen to our music. It would be wrong of us unless they listened to it themselves. When were older and have kids, they will listen to their music. It will be like it is now with us and older adults.

  3. i agree that older adults do not like our music. i wouldnt say that we should talk to them about it unless they wanted to. i also dont think it really matters if they like our type of music or not. just like it doesnt matter if we like theres.

I agree with what matt said below, I think the reason adults look down on todays music is because of the influence it has on their children. Today's music compared to music that was listened to in our parents generation has more evidence, cursing and extremely more vulgar. When you grow up with a particular genre of music, its hard to accept anything new. Everyone has their own taste in music and thats what make people unique.

  5. I agree with Adam i believe that adults do not like the music in the day and age because of all the swearing and always talking about smoking weed. Personally I listen to some music from our adults music era and i like it. But adults do not give the music in today's era a chance because it is so different from the music that they grew up on.

  6. I think it depends on the older adults you talk to. Many cannot listen to modern day music mainly because of how loud and rough the instrumentals are. Alot of modern day music has alot of bass and that can hurt more sensitive ears. This could be a reason why they will not give modern day music a chance. But, it is good to keep in mind that some people are set in their ways and don't like change. Perhaps they are so used to the type of music that they grew up with, and don't want to have to go through all the effort to change their music tastes, that they stick with what they know. What is comfortable. We shouldn't judge this need to retain what they know. All music is good, but different genres of music has a way of reaching out to different people. Maybe we should accept this and embrace it.

  7. Music is a lifestyle to people. Arguing about music and the different genres and tastes people have about it is just as productive as arguing about the amish lifestyle. It doesn't really get anywhere because there are so many opinions and so many music styles out there. Because today's adults grew up on certain music, of course they wouldn't be as open to todays music because it doesn't really reflect what they went through at that point in their life. Music is popular with younger culture because young adults and teens use it as a reflection of their personality and a way to express their beliefs. Adults obviously don't have the same mindset as todays younger culture, therefore they won't like our music.

It mostly have to do with age group, there is music i listened to in highschool that i loved, but don't find it as enjoyable today, possibly because i'm not in the same mindset as i was back then. Music tastes matures and change as your life experiences occur and you evolve.

  8. I've let my dad listen to some of the music i listen to. Sometimes he likes the songs and other times he turns his nose up. He always talks about how a lot of the music our generation listens to has no meaning to it. Money, Sex, and drugs, and degrading women seems to be the main topics in many songs.

  9. I also agree that older adults don't always like the music from this generation because of the negative influence it has over the youth. On the other hand, this can vary depending on the adult and the music. Perhaps, if you let them listen to more recent music they might enjoy it, but I believe over all they are partial to the music from their own generation because it connects them back to their youth.

  10. Older generations are set in their ways. Like how most of our generation loves the 90's music that we grew up with, other generations love the "oldies" they grew up with. Even if rap and hip-hop music has a good message, most of the older generations are unable to get past the genre. It just does not appeal to them.

  11. I agree that older generations are set in their ways. However, my friends dad likes Jay-Z because he uses a lot of instruments like the saxophone for the beat of his music. My father also enjoys when some people "mash" older songs with newer ones to create a new song. So I think it all depends on the person, but for the most part convincing older generations is a tough task.

  12. I agree with your last statement. I don't see the older generations ever liking the popular music that there is today. They were brought up in a different world than we were and are not used to harsh language growing up which is included in a good amount of rap songs today. But I do think that every person is different also, I am in the newer generation and I am not a huge fan of rap but I love artists that my parents listen too, (bruce springsteen, rolling stones, steve miller band etc) and like you said there are some people in older generation that like rap so it can differ, everyone has a different ear for music.

  13. I get what you're saying about the older generations not appreciating certain "newer" styles or music and the rap genre. But you have to remember how they grew up, how they were raised with totally different morals and culture surrounding them. Also, I think that the older generation might be more apt to listen and understand the music style if they didn't see what the artist looked like, since they judge the artists or bands by looks rather than their musical ability.

  14. I think the main reason older adults don't like our music is because they like what they are used to. They grew up listening to different music than we did, so thats going to be what they like better. But at the same time there are adults out their who really like music of today just as much as theirs, so I think it just depends.

  15. I dont think it is necessarily true that all older generations dislike "newer" music. My mother actually likes a lot of the music of my generation. There are genres my mom has always not liked and it stands to be the same for her in the era of music. She still is very keen on her generation of music, but now and then my mom will recognize lyrics from older generations that have been remixed into this generation of music.

  16. I think that older adults do not need to accept the current style of music played by teens and young adults. When they were young, their parents did not like the music they chose to play. Most adults I know at least tolerate the current style of music, since they know what it is like to be at odds over their music choices. Also, if they are very against it, then I think they should not have to listen to it.

  17. I agree, forms of art appeal to people different ways. I feel it's important that people respect a musician's art form even if they don't like it.

  18. The older people are old and set in their ways. I dont think that talking to them will do anything beyond getting them to stop complaining so much. I can understand why they dont like our music. The older generation talked about some of the same graphic topics as songs do today, but the approaches are different. Like Rick James' song, "Mary Jane", its not as clear that he could be talking about drugs. Yet, a artists like Wiz Khalifa, Snoop Dogg and Big sean are anything but slick in their approch to speacking of this subject. So, I dont think its the music so much as it is the in-your-face lyrics.

  19. Most older adults I know have grown accustomed to the newer music styles and actually have made it a preferred music they listen to. But as a younger generation we could do a better job of explaining our culture to the people who don't know.

  20. It might take a while for adults to actually come around to listening to our style of music. There are some adults that listen to and enjoy our music. It is just about if they like the music and how we portray it.

  21. I agree with with London. Even if someone doesn't prefer to listen to a particular artist's music, they should still respect all forms of it. As long as they're respectful to all forms, there should be no problems. It's when older generations try to make newer music out to be bad for the newer generations that there becomes a conflict.

  22. Music plays a prominent role in everyone's lives. We all have a favorite artist or band and reasons to support why. Just because someone does not listen to a type of music does not mean that they don't like it, they simply have other preferences. Older adults find the music we grew up with to be quite different from what they knew, just like how we view younger kids music as different. Music is constantly changing and everyone is going to have their own likes and dislikes. Keeping an open mind is key.

  23. I think that some older people are so use to what they've listened to in the old days they don't want to hear anything. Some older adults listen to hip-hop as well depending on their style of music. As for people getting into hip-hop and rap I think some people don't really know their ways of life so they cant understand it.

  24. I agree with crystal on how parents need to open up there hearts and minds to new styles of music. people listen to the a new style of music like rap/techno/indie and dubstep. older adults cant listen to the same style of music all the time that why they need to open up and experinses the new style.

  25. I agree that a lot of older adults don't listen to and appreciate music of today's generation, but I think it goes both ways because a lot of young people do not listen to music from the past. We should do so because a lot of the artist that we listen to were influenced from the music that the older generation grew up listening to.

  26. I agree with Christine many older adults don't change on their life. That's why they cant open up to other styles of music.

  27. It all depends on the older adult and what their taste is in music. It always differ from person in what they like and what they don't. I believe a lot of older adults can enjoy newer music whether it's rap or pop but it all depends on who is listening and what type of rap or pop it is. Of course rap music about girls and drugs wouldn't be enjoyable to someone that is older in age but if the rap song has a catchy beat and the song is about love or life in generally, an older person may be more susceptible to enjoyment in the tune.

  28. As we age, people are always going to dislike what newer generations have to offer. Everyone always says " It'll will never be the same" but to me, it actually is. Some of those songs back in the day are just as raunchy as today's music, just a different approach. As much as they claim there is a difference in music styles, there isn't. And there is not much to change their opinion; that's what they lived through, that's what they now.

  29. I don't feel we have to get them to understand our choice of music. We come from a different era, so we're not going to be into the same things. And that's ok, we're allowed to agree to disagree, however I think that we should be considerate enough of each others difference to allow both adult and young adult an opportunity to listen to what they like.
